Focusing on the experiences of ordinary men,women, and children from Iran and Afghanistan in the east to Morocco in the west, this anthology vividly conveys a "grassroots" sense of Middle East culture and society today. The work locates Islam as a major influence in the everyday life; however, it also demonstrates that other factors such as work patterns and community and gender relations are often based on traditions outside/older than Islam and that these, too, are of great importance in shaping individuals' lives, beliefs, and hopes. Thirty-four selctions include essays, short stories, poetry and more.

Teacher/Librarians: 9th grade to adult. Social Studies/Humanities/Language Arts. See The Arab World Studies Notebook for lesson plans designed by Genevieve Wilson for using two of the essays from this work: (1) Chraibi's story "The Son's Return" for teaching about the Colonial Legacy; and (2) Donna Lee Bowen's "Abu Illya and Zakat" for teaching about the month of Ramadan fasting. These are wonderful short stories/essays and like the other thirty-two have a rich role to play in your classroom. Wilson's lesson plans are thoughtful, authentic, and provide springboards for much discussion.

it's pretty good.

Lots of diverse little essays on different aspects of daily life. Some feel a bit dated (like 30 or 40 years old), and one wonders if rapidly changing world would still mesh with those thoughts. But as a general reader with country-specific details and a few points that might generalize over the region.... it's pretty good.

About the Author
Dr Kandice Kottke-Marchant, MD PhD, Section Head, Hemostasis and Thrombosis, Department of Clinical Pathology, The Cleveland Clinic Foundation, Cleveland, Ohio, USA and President, International Society of Laboratory Hematology. She is also a Professor of Pathology at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine and an Adjunct Professor of Biomedical Engineering at Case Western Reserve University. She has published over 100 peer-reviewed publications in the field of haemostasis, is an international expert on platelet testing and aspirin resistance, and has served on review panels from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), College of American Pathologists (CAP), ISO/TC212 and North American Specialized Coagulation Laboratory Association (NASCOLA). She has been a driving force to increase the international visibility and impact of the ISLH. She has been responsible for running the ISLH annual Symposia since 2002. Due to her involvement in haemostasis and the ISLH, Dr. Kottke-Marchant will be uniquely positioned to serve as one of the co-Editors of the Textbook of Laboratory Hematology.

Elkin Simson, MD, PCAP, FACSP is the Medical Director of the Center for Clinical Laboratories and Hematology Laboratory at the Mount Sinai Hospital. He is also Associate Professor and Vice Chairman of the Department of Pathology at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, New York, NY, USA. Dr. Simson was formerly the Vice-President for Medical and Scientific Affairs at Technicon Instruments Corporation, where he participated in the development of the first automated haematology analyzers to combine the CBC and WBC differential into a single instrument. Dr Simson is the Past President of the ISLH and is Vice-President of the International Council for Standardization in Hematology (ICSH). He has been Chairman of the Hematology Area Committee of NCCLS (now CLSI), a member of Council of the National Reference System for the Clinical Laboratory (NRSCL) and the Hematology and Quality Improvement Subcommittees of the NCCCLS. He was a member of the Hematology and Pathology Advisory Panel of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Due to his long-time involvement in haematology automation and standards organizations, Dr. Simson is an idea co-editor.

The proposed section editors are chosen from international experts in their respective fields; most have also been long-time ISLH members who have been faculty at one or more ISLH Symposia and who have been repeatedly recognized as outstanding speakers and contributors by the participants. Dr Bruce Davis is one of the co-founders of the ISLH and has a long history of involvement in developing automated cellular and flow cytometric technologies. Professor Alberto Orfao from Spain is one of the world’s foremost experts on flow cytometry. Professor Samuel Machin is currently President of the British Society of Haematology and is an international authority on haemostasis testing. Stefanie McFadden is a medical technologist who is sought after as a consultant for laboratory management and informatics issues.

Churchill, always a man of the nineteenth century in outlook and prejudice, had a lifelong fascination with the "Great Game" as practiced in the borderlands of India and its variations around the world. Former diplomat Stafford compellingly tells the fateful story of Winston Churchill's lifelong obsession with intelligence and secret warfare, which had both trivial and large-scale consequences for the British from the Boer War through the 1950s. From the outset of his colorful multiple career as an imperial officer, journalist, man of letters, and statesman, Churchill evinced a romantic fascination with the arcana of secret intelligence work. Stafford, an intelligence historian (The Silent Game, not reviewed), traces this fixation to a brief 1895 stint in Cuba, where Churchill covered the rebellion against Spain for a British newspaper. At once idealizing and fearing the rebels, Churchill saw for the first time the effects of a popular insurrection fought by guerrillas: The rebels, who had perfect intelligence of Spanish locations and operations, often fought with an insurmountable advantage over the unwieldy government forces. Churchill had similar reactions to other guerrilla tactics he observed or experienced, whether in Ireland in the troubles of 191621 or by anticommunist forces against the Bolshevik regime in the early 1920s; guerrillas, cloaked in secrecy and backed by popular support, were able to win wars against numerically superior conventional opponents through superior intelligence and covert activities. During WW I he founded the first signals intelligence organization, and after the collapse of the tsarist regime he became deeply involved in the ultimately disastrous anticommunist activities of master spy Sidney Reilly. It was as a wartime prime minister, however, that Churchill's concern with spying had the most concrete effect: He forged an important intelligence alliance with the US, oversaw Britain's ``Ultra'' operation, which brilliantly intercepted the communications of the Nazi command, and founded the Special Operations Executive, which ran daring operations in Nazi-occupied Europe, gave aid to resistance movements across Europe, and ultimately engendered Britain's modern intelligence apparatus. Groundbreaking work on Churchill

"Churchill and Secret Service" documents the life long connection between him and secret intelligence. The author traces this back to Churchill's experience as a journalist in the Cuban revolt against Spain. His romantic nature, combined with the undisputed effectiveness of the guerillas, instilled in him a faith in guerilla warfare and its requirement of good intelligence. The book continues through Churchill's association with "room 40" during WWI, and his continued receipt of intelligence reports during the years "in the wilderness". Naturally the bulk of the work concerns itself with the Second World War, the creation of SOE and the secret armies. The author delves into the "special relationship" between the UK and US and reveals in detail the serious conflicts between SIS/SOE and the OSS-an area that often does not receive much attention by historians. Churchill's second term as prime minister,and subsequent retirement conclude the work. What it shows is that Churchill, probably more than any other political leader, understood the value and the dangers of secret intelligence, and knew how to employ it (most of the time). His experience provides excellent lessons to those who collect or use strategic/operational intelligence,"intelligence was not an end in itself and did not belong to those who produced it." Would that our current intelligence structure followed this advice...

This is an excellent work from an author that thoroughly researches every detail of the subject before it is put to print. As all of Staffords work, the factual basis is unquestionable. Anyone that reads this work will have a deep understanding of the time period and the personalities involved.

A little more time spent on Churchill's life and career, and the times in which he lived, would be helpful to making this book more readable and more interesting. I found myself going to the internet often to look up passing references of names and events to understand what the author was conveying about Churchill. This book is awesome! Any one interested in the life of Jesus should own it. It's a big, high-quality, beautifully-produced book filled with photos, maps and drawings. There is interesting background information on the culture and times backed by the latest archaeological research. The authorsgoes through the life of Jesus and his intent is to make you see, feel and smell the sights and sounds of that time. He succeeds in this goal. I highly recommend this book!

Nice book

I was curious about this book, what with it being a National Geographic publication. I am a fan of National Geographic but, being a Christian, I didn't want Jesus treated as only an historic figure. I don't feel this has been done though.

I usually read reviews, but in this case I found the inside look to be very helpful. I have not read the whole of it yet, but I am certainly learning a lot about the historical time and the art is beautiful.

I am very pleased with this buy.

extremely difficult book

im > 1800 uscf and this book is very difficult. These are the types of exercises I was looking for. THIS IS NOT A BEGINNER TACTICS BOOK and is IDENTICAL to "secret of Chess Tactics" by Dvoretsky So if you own one there is no need to buy this one.

A Highly Rewarding Study

As a player with a growing but still modest chess library, it was only recently that I discovered Dvoretsky's name recurring in the books and reviews of players in-the-know. School of Chess Excellence 2 was my first foray into his writings and I have found it tremendously rewarding, though difficult, to work through. Chief among the book's virtues is its willingness to approach the games of chess legends and relative unknowns with equal respect and equal care, and to strike an excellent balance between analysis and commentary in doing so. Dvoretsky's own games, as well as those of his leading pupils, figure prominently in the work, and contribute a host of insights into the differences between planning and playing, succeeding and failing.
The analysis itself is first-rate. As a player of average talent, I often find tactical analysis comes most easily in positions that are already themselves overtly tactical. By contrast, Dvoretsky excels at revealing the subtlety of tactical thought as it develops through the course of a game. As a result, he routinely shows a culminating tactical shot to be the punctuation mark to a rigorous process of continually seeking out the best move, rather than a stroke of brilliance arriving like a bolt from the blue.
As a stylist, Dvoretsky can tend towards the self-congratulatory from time to time, though this may be as much a result of the difficulties of translation as anything else. For the most part he is likeable and accessible. I agree with previous reviewers that the ideas presented are both difficult and dense, but they should not prevent any player beyond a beginner level from comprehending the book and benefiting greatly from it, provided one is patient. I recommend it.

Great book for advanced players

Dvoretsky's book is for advanced players. In order to get maximum benefit one should probably have a rating of at least 2000 FIDE (app. 2100 USCF). At that level basic tactical skills would be in place. However, in order to develop further one must work with more complicated material, basically well-annotated complex tactical games.
This is where Dvoretsky comes in. The book is packed with complex games and analysis of very high quality, with additional observations and succinct advice about decision-making and psychology in tactical situations. In this book chess is a very concrete game - the master-teacher is a firm believer in the power of the specific example more than in overall synthesis or general conclusions.
If you are looking for quick fixes or easily digested "lessons", look elsewhere. However, if you have reached a certain level of play and are willing to put in the work (answering the training questions, doing independent analysis) its instructional value is very high.
I am rated 2200 ICC standard and have gone through about half of the book. In some positions I have managed very well, but in many others I have missed some points or the main point. I know that I am relatively weak tactically so I have to remind myself that rewards will come from the very fact of trying to solve these problems.
In short: a excellent book for hard-working advanced players

Everett B. Woodruff was a Project Engineer at A. M. Kinney, Inc., a leading architectural, engineering, and design process firm. He was involved in the design of industrial and utility power plants and provided consultation in steam plant operation and maintenance; in plant performance test requirements; and in the development of overall power plant specifications.

Herbert B. Lammers was a consultant for various industries which were dependent upon steam power plants for their reliable source of power. He provided expertise in the efficient combustion of various fuels and in the economic operation and maintenance of boilers and various power plant systems.

Thomas F. Lammers was a Senior Project Manager with Babcock & Wilcox Co., one of the world’s leading designers and suppliers of steam generating systems and related power plant equipment. The first time I read this compilation, I was blown away! I realized that the great minds of the western world had been greatly influenced by the sacred texts of India. Because of this book, my desire to learn, to read, to study had increased manifold. What I had read of western philosophy had been merely glimpses of the awe-inspiring wisdom held by the great Rishis of India and passed on through thousands of years through the Vedas, Upanishads, and Gitas. From the Author
At 16 I played in a punk rock band and lived rock and roll. Then after decades of seeking the truth, living in communes, I visited Asia Minor, Turkey, to attend a writers retreat. As soon as I got off that plane I felt I was home, in a way that I had never experienced before. I didn't finish my novel, because I fell in love with this incredible country and its people. I went back to Scotland, but soon realised that my time was finished there, and so I emigrated, I was pulled back, destiny was truly calling... Some two years later I arrived at the shore of the Aegean with one bag and no idea of what to do... Within a few weeks I came to know the mother of my son who was born two years later... I had many exhibitions of my art, played Mevlavi music in street concerts, recorded albums... Then I became seriously ill and I was confined to my home for a year, and just knew that I was being stopped in my tracks, incarcerated, so to speak, so that I could write this book; 'Seeds of Future Worlds'. I had to finally, 'Know Thy Self', to truly live a  Spiritual life, to know my soul and be true to it. My book of short stories and poems is published here, 'Sui Generis', and I am currently working on my next book, 'Musicians of Thought' about Reincarnation, inspired by the works of Rudolf Steiner.

About the Author
I live on the coast of the Aegean on the ancient site of Myndos, Anatolia, a mystery centre once home to the temple of Prometheus. I live as an artist, a poet, muscian, scholar and writer. It is as if I have lived many lives in this one incarnation. My five year old son is the light of my life. Born in London, travelled the world in love.

Be inspired!

What an interesting and inspiring book, full of challenging ideas and clearly well researched. This is a spiritual book that really delves deeply into the subjects covered within the pages, but it does so, not in an intellectual over bearing way so common in this genre, but through imagination and poetry, fluidly written so that you feel embraced by the words and the author. Wonderful quotes throughout, from Goethe, Novalis, Rumi, Rudolf Steiner and many others that all help to bring the subjects to life and illustrate the themes.
