Sue Hubbell is the author of eight books, including A Country Year and New York Times Notable Book A Book of Bees. She has written for the New Yorker, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Smithsonian, and Time, and was a frequent contributor to the “Hers” column of the New York Times. Hubbell lives in Maine and Washington, DC.

do not follwow these beekeeping practices

A very old book - written in 1988. Nice story but please do not follow her bee keeping practices as they are outdated and she has to use all kinds of dangerours chemicals for two reasons. First she uses a langstroth hive which requires equipment to be stored over the winter and needs chemicals to clean it. I am a Top Bar beekeeper so this approach does not require equipment stored over winter. Secondly she did not practice treatment free beekeeping so it was difficult for me to read this book as I am a treatment free beekeeper.

A delightful book

A friend lent this book to me and I waited a while before I picked it up, but when I did, I could hardly put it down. Sue Hubbell's writing style is engaging and just fun to read.
I learned a lot about bees and beekeeping, a little about the author and a little about myself when I read this book. She lays it on the line about what is involved in beekeeping. If you have any inclination to keep bees, Sue Hubbell will dispell any romantic myths you may have about the process. But she also paints a picture of idyllic days in fields surrounded by forests, observing the wondrous life of bees.
Sue Hubbell's real contribution to the beekeeping literature is that she tells about her own special ways with bees, based on many years working with them, some of which counter common theories about them. I would think that a beekeeper would find this information very useful, and I found it simply fascinating.

informative story about a beekeeper's year

This is not strictly a how-to about beekeeping. There are other fine books that will provide that if you need it (Backyard Beekeeper comes to mind). However, I found Sue Hubbell's book to be a great companion to the how-to. It reads much more like a story recounting a year in the life of a commercial beekeeper.

Not only did I find great advice from someone who has worked with bees for many years and understands their nature as well as any human could. But I also enjoyed learning about Sue's humble and deeply rewarding life as a beekeeper and student of bees.

I was able to pick up some valuable tips and hints to use with my own bees. I also gained a deeper appreciation for the beekeeping profession whether you are a part-timer or a pro. And lastly, what a complex and wonderful creation is the honeybee. And what a privilege to work with them.

James Krenov is the author of ""The Fine Art of Cabinetmaking,"" ""The Impractical Cabinetmaker,"" and ""Worker in Wood."" He directs the Cabinetmaking Program at the College of the Redwoods, one of the premier woodworking programs in the United States. He lives in Fort Bragg, California.

The first he wrote and the last I purchased.

Like many I'm a JK follower. His writing and thoughts on woodworking are about the way we work with wood and why. Even how JK does it in this his first book which I didn't have but have since gone through it and gleaned some more wisdom. One thing that stood out for me is being my own teacher by not only observing what I am doing while I do it but paying close attention to my methods.

I now have all his books.

Exceeded Expectation

This book exceeded my expectation. Previously I found the author to be a rambler. Meaning using a hundred words to express a thought or idea which could be stated with ten. In writing this book he still rambles, however he managed to keep my interest. Woodworkers who's are beyond the "How To" stage should find the book enjoyable.
