About the Author

Tobias Wolff was born in Birmingham, Alabama, and grew up in Washington State. He attended Oxford University and Stanford University, where he now teaches English and creative writing. He has received the Story Prize, both the Rea Award and PEN/Malamud Award for excellence in the short story, the Los Angeles Times Book Award, and the PEN/Faulkner Award.

Good Change of Pace

I normally don't read short stories. They're often a little too compressed for me and perhaps a little obtuse. I know that's a terrible generalization but I prefer novels, especially thrillers of some kind. But I chanced upon this collection of short stories by Wolff and totally enjoyed them. Wolff is a careful, skilled and very able writer who can take seemingly ordinary people and turn them into memorable characters. As the book jacket says, Wolff's characters "stumble over each other in their baffled yet resolute search for the 'right path.'" That seems to be the essence of each of these terse but pithy stories and that sentence sums it up better than I could. I enjoyed the book. Who knows, maybe I'll start reading more short stories...

Truly Short, Though Highly Engaging, Stories

This short story collection from Tobias Wolff is truly just that. Each story gives you enough of the bare essentials to keep you informed and invested, but they never cross the line into anything remotely superfluous. Each story feels very much like you've entered right into the middle of things and you are there for the climax, but not necessarily the introduction or the conclusion.

While I found this book to be an effective exercise in the art of the short story, I was even more moved by the flaws each character in every story displayed. Wolff had grand success in getting down to the heart of who and what people are, and that is, in essence, good people that usually display less than admirable traits. We all have those idiosyncrasies that make us unique and often troubling to our friends and family, and Wolff captures perfectly normal, though certainly troublesome, eccentricities amongst his characters that give us all we need to know about their particular story.

This is a very fast and interesting read, and if you ever wanted to engage in a deep character study in the genre of the short story, this is the collection for you.

Wolff is likely the modern equivalent of Bret Harte or Hamlin Garland; his stories are rich, carefully and attentively written, and leave the reader with something to think about without lecturing or moralizing. Great selection for the modern classroom or just by the bedside for a good read.

Another Masterpiece by Swindoll!

Swindoll's book on the Apostle Paul is the 6th in a series of Bible characters and in my humble opinion, the best character study so far.
Among the important points Swindoll covers include:
1. Biblical examples of people who waited long period of time before being used greatly by God.
2. An independent spirit does not please God - He much prefers the humble and broken-hearted.
3. Exceptional work is preceded by extended waiting and 4 principles for trusting God while waiting in the shadows (this alone was worth the price of the book).
4. While boasting about our weakness is not popular in today's culture, life is about God, not us!
5. 3 perspectives to have when in a strong disagreement.
6. Sometimes turnmoil, hardship, and persecution means you are in the middle of God's will.
7. 4 excellent points to consider for powerful preaching.
8. Be careful of letting your subjective experiences be your ultimate guide in life - God's Word is much more reliable!
9. Effective ministry and opposition go hand in hand.
10. Patterns of behavior and observations about heroes who stand up while everyone sits down.
11. 4 anchors to hold on to during stormy times.
12. 7 exhortations for faithful service.

Practical Applications and Insight from the Life of Paul

Charles Swindoll presents not just a biography of Paul, but also gives practical examples and applications of the principles that guided Paul's life so that the reader can also examine his or her own life, and apply these principles. Paul is introduced as a brutal persecutor and enemy of Christ. Yet by Grace he was redeemed and became the gentle apostle. This shows that no matter how dark our past is, how wretched we are, we are not outside the reach of God's wonderful and amazing grace. No one is beyond hope and no matter what you've done you can have a new beginning in Christ. Swindoll also tells of the seemingly insignificant people in Paul's life, the Ananias who was called to go to Paul while he was blinded, and the unnamed disciples who helped him escape Damascus in a basket, Aquila and Priscilla, two tentmakers who shared Paul's trade as he made his way on his journeys. Each of these people are part of the fabric of God's plan and purpose making a difference in someone else's life. God can use the most humble, broken vessels and do great things with them because it is His work and purpose. Therefore a lesson is that you never know whether the little act you did had a place in a much larger purpose, such as lowering Paul over a wall in the basket resulting in bringing the Gospel to the Gentiles and to the uttermost parts of the world. Be faithful in the little things and let God work the big picture.
These and other examples, such as leadership, contentment, facing extreme circumstances, leaning on God's strength, etc., can all be gleaned out of Paul's life. Charles Swindoll does a wonderful job of weaving the biography with these insights. The best way to read this book is alongside your Bible. Before you're done with this book, you'd also be through the book of Acts, parts of each epistle, and end with 2nd Timothy, as you'll appreciate what was going through Paul's heart as he is waiting for his homecoming.
4:6 For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand.
4:7 I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith:
From a self-righteous persecutor to the humble apostle, Paul's life shows how anyone can be redeemed by grace, and fight the good fight through grit, where God's strength is made perfect in our weakness.

A challenging portrait of a man devoted to Christ

Charles Swindoll's Paul: A man of grace and grit is a fascinating look at one of the New Testament's biggest
contributors. Saul of Tarusus or better known as Paul the apostle is truly a man of grit. Born in a Jewish family.
A devout follower of Judaism. A man devoted to Jewish law and persecuting Christians. Swindoll fleshes out Saul from the book of Acts
in great detail. Saul persecuted Christians as Hitler persecuted Jews during the 1940's. Saul was a man who violently
opposed to Christ, his teachings, and his followers. He hunted them down. Tried them, and stoned them.
Odd that such a man would end up not only worshipping Jesus, but also writing some of the most beautiful words in the New Testament and spreading the gospel.
How strange that such a man who spewed forth such hate toward Christians would turn around and write such a beautiful
testament to love (Letter to Corinthians).
Swindoll's Paul is presented in 22 chapters, that cover everything from Paul's beginnings, meeting with Christ risen, to his ministry, and finally his death. Each chapter refers and reflects to appropriate bible passages, mostly those from Acts.
What was surprising was that each chapter also ended in a reflection. For example, chapter 2: The violent capture of a rebel will, covers Saul's encounter with Christ. Here a violent man is converted into a spokes person for the very person Saul hates the most. Amazing really.
Swindolls refers to this change as "Kicking against God's goads". "To kick against the goads" was a common expression found in both Greek and Latin literature, which rose from the practice of farmers goading their oxen in the fields. Goads were typically made from slender pieces of timber, blunt on one end and pointed on the other. Farmers used the pointed end to urge a stubborn ox into motion. Occasionally, the beast would kick at the goad. The more the ox kicked, the more likely it would stab into the flesh of it leg, causing pain.
Saul's conversion may not have been quick, but with Saul's previous violent lifestyle and Christ haunting words, those words may
have been the "goad" that pushed Saul into Paul and a past of hate into a future of preaching the gospel. Swindoll ends the chapter on a wonderful reflection on what "goads" you? Is God goading you perhaps?
Are you holding onto some rebellious attitude that perhaps the Lord is goading you to let go of?
Each chapter has a reflection like this. Each chapter not only brings us closer to how Paul lived, but also asks us to examine our relationship with God, our loved ones, and even ourselves.
This book is # 6 in the series. I'll have to pick up the previous books, and sincerely hope that Charles Swindoll adds a #7 in the series.

Classic though not Hornblower's best outing

This first Hornblower book that Forester wrote was BEAT TO QUARTERS, and that is still arguably the best Hornblower book to read first (though not the best in the series). Because MR. MIDSHIPMAN HORNBLOWER comes first in the saga's timeline, though, many readers start here and unfortunately do not get Hornblower at his best point of entry. The pacing of this collection of stories simply does not grip the reader as well as that of the novels. I'm sure they worked fine when published individually in the popular magazines of the day, but when clutched together like this, an awkward lack of fluidity results.
That said, MR. MIDSHIPMAN HORNBLOWER is still an excellent book, rich with fascinating incident and detail, and anyone who has started the series will certainly read it -- the whole series is just too good! Certainly by the last episode in this book, quite a long story, the young Hornblower has gotten into the thick of it and you have begun to find out (if this is indeed where you've come in) just why Forester continues to be held in such high regard by generation after generation of readers.
Another important point is that MR. MIDSHIPMAN HORNBLOWER is the material from which the recent A&E series took its inspiration, and you do owe it to yourself if you saw it on TV to read the book and find out why and how that pivotal duel *really* happened. Be prepared to learn that C.S. Forester's plot turns were considerably more dramatic and thought-provoking than the hash (though admittedly watchable hash) made of them for TV consumption.
Incidentally, this paperback edition is lovely. The woodcut-style cover artwork looks really nice, and the pages and typeface being about the same size as a hardback edition make handling it and reading it a special pleasure

Mr. Midshipman Hornblower: A Slow Start for the Series

The 'Hornblower' novels by C. S. Forester are all consistently entertaining and fun, but the first novel in the series, 'Mr. Midshipman Hornblower,' is a rather slow start. Rather than a single novel, it is a series of short stories revolving around Hornblower's first years at sea. While the stories maintain that sense of adventure that are Forester's trademark, it lacks a consistency which is to be found in the later volumes. 'Mr. Midshipman Hornblower' is must reading for fans of the series but for those new to the 'Hornblower' novels perhaps a better introduction would be to read 'Lieutenant Hornblower,' the second novel of the series.

Many years ago i read the Hornblower series, indeed i studied the series. It had three great attributes: a rousing good tale with many twists and turns; pretty good coverage of one of the great wars of modern times, a powerful introduction to the leadership culture of the finest fighting system of its time. This is the beginning of that great adventure. I am off to read volume two.

Steven Babitsky, Esq., is the president of SEAK, Inc, which he founded in 1980. He was a personal injury trial attorney for 20 years and is the former managing partner of the firm Kistin, Babitsky, Latimer & Beitman. He is the seminar leader for the National Expert Witness and Litigation Seminar and was the long time editor of the Expert Witness Journal. Attorney Babitsky is the co-author of numerous texts including Litigating Stress Cases in Workers' Compensation and Understanding The AMA Guides in Workers' Compensation.

James J. Mangraviti, Jr., Esq., has trained hundreds of expert witnesses across the United States and Canada. A useful book to read before negotiating for anything.

Let's face it, most of us physicians stink at negotiating. We spend our entire education and early career doing what we want to do, which is help people. The negotiating process is, by default, selfish. We negotiate our whole career about a number of things, both in and out of our professional settings. This book gives you the basic tools to get started.

The original asking price is a little steep, but you can find a used copy that will likely be handy.

And, there is a newer version out that is a little more expansive, but less likely to find it used. Not many used copies floating around there, because once a doc typically buys this they'll keep it forever.

A good first half, then it degenerates into New Age drivel

"Gods and Worshippers", is a work that was much anticipated in the Heathen/Asatru community. I think these expectations were too great for the book to meet. If the author had only published Part 1 of the book I would be much kinder in my review. This alas, is not the case.

Part 1 of this work is quite good and well written. It broadened my outlook a bit without pushing the envelope too far. I liked Ewing's look at ritual songs and how they may have been passed down through the years and avoided clerical censorship. Additionally, Ewing's comparison of the similarities in the various political gatherings of the Althing, Gulathing, etc. and how that these gatherings were likely to be as much religious/spiritual as they were secular was quite intriguing. When you think about it just makes sense. I hadn't seen it stated so plainly before. The book itself is well put together with a nice glossy cover, quality paper and decent size type face. A few of the photos were a tad blurry but overall well done.

Part 2 however, steps off the edge of reason into the realm of circular logic that is at best flawed and at worst down right fantasy. A separate society of priests and seer's living within the culture? Based on secluded islands or hidden enclaves while practicing bisexual and incestuous rituals? Show me a shared of creditable hard evidence to support this. A troop of one eyed wanderers tramping around Northern Europe? All of them claiming to be the All Father while begging for food and coin is a bit much, don't you think? I also noticed that Ewing's sections on Norns, Mothers and Maiden Norn/Valkyries rang very similer to the "Maiden- Mother-Crone", concept of contemporary Celtic witchcraft. I don't know if this is an attempt to merge the Germanic and the Celtic traditions or just a coincidence.

All and all I do recommend reading this book. If nothing else Ewing makes you think and question your premises. I would however, place it at the bottom of your priority list.

Clever, but too fanciful to be taken seriously

There is a school of thought in mythological scholarship called "Euhemerism" which searches for real events in history to explain the happenings in mythology. Both Saxo and Snorri indulged in such speculation, and a more recent theory, that a peace-loving, agrarian matriarchal society was once overrun by an aggressive, patriarchal warrior society, which explains the myth of the Aesir/Vanir wars, was once in such vogue that it has impacted scholarship and new age philosophy to this day, despite the fact that it has long since been discarded as a feminist fantasy by serious scholars due to a lack of historical and archaeological evidence. Thor Ewing creates a new brand of Euhemerism with his "Gods and Worshippers".

Part One consists of familiar territory to any student of Germanic society, with occasional new angles on old ideas, but nothing revolutionary. It is a walk through a familiar wood, perhaps during a different season. The tome itself is pleasing, printed as it is on glossy paper with illustrations of most of the archeological evidence Ewing refers to, which is a welcome change from the numerous texts which describe but never illustrate such artifacts. The two stars I gave this book refer primarily to this first part and the quality of the book and its illustrations.

Part Two, however, suggests that there was a subculture of magic practitioners in Germanic society who both modeled themselves after and, in an atavistic sense, "were" Odin, Freyja, valkyries and norns, and who wandered the land as seers and magicians when not making their home on special islands practicing the (bi)sexual promiscuity and sibling marriage attributed to Odin and the Vanic gods.

Ewing proceeds by a sort of circular reasoning which criss-crosses wantonly from literature to history and back again. For example he notes that 1) though Odin is well-known in poetry and saga to travel as a one-eyed, hooded wanderer, mortal characters in the poems and sagas rarely recognize him by his appearance, therefore 2) in historical Germanic cultures there must have been numerous followers of Odin who put out one of their eyes and wandered hooded, creating "red herring" odins everywhere, which 3) explains why in the poetry and sagas the characters do not recognize Odin. A more simple explanation may be that this inability to recognize Odin in the poetry and sagas is a literary device. If the mortal characters recognize Odin as a god right off the bat, they will simply fall to their knees and do whatever he says. By not recognizing him, they make meaningful errors in their treatment of him and his words, which reveals their true natures, and thus brings out the meaning of the story. On the mythological side one might add: if the god of mind-fetters does not wish to be recognized, he won't be, regardless of his appearance.

Furthermore, if there were followers of Odin who put out one of their eyes and wandered as seers, where then are the followers of Tyr who lopped off one of their hands? Or worshipers of Thor who pounded whetstones into their skulls? Once you begin to read myths with such literalness, where do you stop?

Had this idea been presented in the context of a fantasy novel, it would have been very clever. Presented, however, as a serious academic study, it seems more like conspiracy theory than real scholarship.

Ewing challenges the skeptical reader in his conclusion, claiming that anyone who doubts his theory must caution themselves "against allowing personal preconceptions based on modern society from colouring our judgment about what might have been likely in past societies." I would turn this question about to the author and ask what preconceptions he possesses which encourage him pick and choose bits of lore to read literally in order to create a sort of "hippie" subculture in Germanic Europe?

Ewing's second challenge to doubtful readers is to find another theory which explains the "multitude of norns", "earthly valkyries" or the numerous names of Odin. I would reply that multiplicity and contradiction are well-established aspects of mythology the world over because the human psyche, which created these myths, has a tendency to create multiplicity and contradiction. And, in the words of H.R. Ellen Davidson: "Attempts to interpret the descriptions in the poems literally...have never wholly succeeded, because the impression the poems give is not a planned and rational world, but rather a series of vivid images which build up a vague but powerful world-picture." When fragmentary sources which span hundreds of years are assembled to create a neat and complete puzzle picture, one wonders if this picture has not been inspired more by cleverness than truth. I would suggest that the tension between the law-giving Aesir and the natural and instinct-driven Vanir in poetry and saga is one that existed in the hearts of men and women in ancient times, as it does to this day, and not in two separate societies.

Those Heathens inspired by occult, new age or neo-shamanistic interpretations of the lore may find Ewing's tale of an organized subculture of sexually free magic-users operating within Germanic culture compelling. Those who take a more sober and scholarly route along the Northern path may find that Ewing's premise requires a suspension of their learned disbelief that reaches rather too far up into the clouds.

Essential Reading

This is really a great book that has been unfairly misrepresented by some of the reviewers. For instance, I don't think it has anything to do with euhemerism.

Even the first part of the book is quite original - in fact it's more original than Ewing makes out. It's one of the best descriptions I know of Viking temples, rituals and so on - certainly the best you can get hold of easily - and with some great insights. I found things I'd never come across before, but the main thing is that it's a completely fresh angle on the whole thing.

The second part is pretty revolutionary, and it looks like some people really don't get on with it. Ewing's conclusions might be radical, but it's not true that he doesn't argue the case well. It's carefully argued with a sense of caution, and I really don't think it relies on circular logic - in fact everything seems to be argued from about three angles. And the breadth of evidence is really impressive.

I'm not sure yet what to make of Ewing's conclusions, but I don't want to prejudge the issue. It seems pretty outlandish, but you can't knock it down easily without simply ignoring a lot of the argument and evidence he presents. I'm beginning to think he's probably right.

Because of the debate it raises, I don't think you can be a real student of Viking religion unless you've read this book - there's also an excellent summary of Viking and Germanic funeral customs. But steer clear if you don't want to shake the old romantic view of Germanic paganism.

This book contains the post-War Borneo memoirs of Agnes Keith. Keith, who had published a popular book, Land Beneath the Wind, about life as the wife of a colonial official in Northern Borneo in 1939, returned to Borneo in time to be interned by the Japanese. Her experiences in the Japanese prison camps were the topic of her second book, Three Came Home. This third book is about her return to Borneo and her recovery from the years in prison camp. Much of the first half of this book catches us up with what happened to the familiar characters from her earlier books during the War. The members of her domestic staff had been dispersed, and not all survived the years of deprivation and depravity. Thus, she had to hire new staff, who also brought with them some heavy emotional baggage from the War. The second half of the book relates some of the adventures of her son George as he lives the second half of his boyhood in Borneo, this time in freedom and as a member of a privileged, if not wealthy, class. The remainder of the book is filled out with anecdotes of life in Southeast Asia, including correspondence from Japan and China, a jungle trek, and a racially motivated murder.

Keith is a wonderful storyteller. It is refreshing to read in her tales how normal a boy George turned out to be, despite his rough start in the prison camps. I found the stories from the first part of the book most compelling, the ones in which she seemed to be working out her own recovery from post-traumatic stress as much as telling the stories. As we read in these pages, in the five years following the War, she gradually pulled her emotions together again, and was even eventually able to manage some humor. Her war time experiences also strengthened her ties with the local populace of Borneo--the Chinese, the Indians, the Malays, and the tribal people. If you have enjoyed any of Keith's earlier books or seen the movie Three Came Home, you will want to read this book to find out what happened next.

Continuing story of the life of Agnes Newton Keith

The book was interesting, telling more about the author's life, after being held prisoner by the Japanese during WWII. The author is able to describe events and the country, and give the reader the sense of how things were during that time period in North Borneo. Anyone who is interested in WWII detainees and how they coped with life after being released should find this book interesting and informative.

Great follow-up to Three Came Back.

Enjoyable read. Nice to know how life continued after the horrific conditions of the Japanese camp. It took a strong family to go back to the place where such bad things happened.
