In the early 1980s, Springfield Remanufacturing Corporation (SRC) in Springfield, Missouri, was a near bankrupt division of International Harvester. That's when a green young manager, Jack Stack, took over and turned it around. He didn't know how to "manage" a company, but he did know about the principal, of athletic competition and democracy: keeping score, having fun, playing fair, providing choice, and having a voice. With these principals he created his own style of management -- open-book management. The key is to let everyone in on financial decisions. You Can't Manage What You Don't Measure

All games have rules. When the score is kept, there are winners and losers. Business is no different. The concept of open-book management has been around since some company owner in the distant past gathered employees and attempted to explain to them why it is so important to produce quality work, on time and without waste. No doubt at least one of those employees wondered "What's in it for me?" Good question.
With contributions by Bo Burlingham, Stack wrote this book (first published in 1992) partly in response to that question. He introduces "The Higher Laws of Business":
1. You get what you give.
2. Its easy to stop one guy, but it's pretty hard to stop 100.
3. What goes around comes around.
4. You do what you gotta do.
5. You gotta wanna.
6. You can sometimes fool the fans, but you can never fool the players.
7. When you raise the bottom, the top rises.
8. When people set their own targets, they usually hit them.
9. If nobody pays attention, people stop caring.
10. As they say in Missouri: Shit rolls downhill. By which we mean change begins at the top.
To these Stack adds "The Ultimate Higher Law": When you appeal to the highest level of thinking, you get the highest level of performance. These are the eleven laws on which Stack's system of open-book management is based. He explains each in thorough detail. Let's say that you agree that these laws make sense, that they are relevant to your own organization. Now what?
Pretend that you have entered "Stack's Open-Book Management Store." He greets you at the door. For the next several hours, he guides you through an abundance of strategies, tactics, measurement instruments, communication devices, policies, procedures, etc. He answers all of your questions. He offers a number of caveats. He shares his own successes and failures. He directs you to the latest "newer and better" but also to "what still works really well." At the end of your visit, you are fully prepared to pick and choose from among all the options. Then he assists you with formulation of a plan to design and then implement your own open-book management program, one which is specifically appropriate to the needs of your own organization. In effect, this what happens as you read the book. I recommend it highly. Even if an open-book management program is not what your organization currently needs, the issues Stack addresses and the questions he raises are still worthy of your thoughtful consideration.

Employers are increasingly challenged to find ways to engage their people, to inspire and motivate them, and to encourage them to stay with the organization for an extended period of time. Employers who can be successful in attaining these lofty goals can dominate their markets, drive more money to the bottom line, and enjoy a stable, productive, and happy workforce.
Jack Stack and his associates at Springfield Remanufacturing Corporation learned how to do this. It was a fascinating, educational, and sometimes painful journey, with benefits that exceeded the wildest dreams of those who put the plan together and made it work. The secret? Share numbers with your employees. All the numbers that have meaning-from profit and loss to balance sheet, from sales projections to costing standards. The concept is that the more employees know-and understand, the more they will partner and support the company's mission and goals (which they also help set).
The most vital issue here, I think, is that every employee becomes more educated, more involved, more committed, and-end result-more loyal. They become a part of a team, rather than just workers. No longer is their relationship with the employer "just a job." It's now considerably more, as they participate in the decisions that drive the company's success. When employees are motivated this way and have so much more control over vital aspects of their employment lives, they will stay longer with their employer. There are more reasons to stay than to leave. Result: a substantially more stable, dedicated, and effective workforce.
The book begins with a "Players Guide," a chapter-by-chapter outline of what will be covered. By itself, this guide is a valuable tool to stimulate thinking. The questions are thought-provoking, creating a hunger in the reader's mind for more information. The answers are presented in the chapters that follow.
Stack makes it clear from the outset that he's writing for an audience of doubters and the curious and suspicious. The front matter includes a presentation entitled, "Does it really work or is it a bunch of hype?" Right to the point. The reader gets the sense, even before getting into the meat of the book, that this author will tell it like it is. And he does.
The author's higher laws of business are presented to place things in perspective. Consider the premise that Stack's design is to get people involved, committed, and supportive, and these postulates make sense. 1. you get what you give 2. it's easy to stop one guy, but it's pretty hard to stop 100 3. what goes around comes around 4. you gotta do what you gotta do 5. you gotta wanna 6. you can sometimes fool the fans, but you can never fool the players. 7. when you raise the bottom, the top rises 8. when people set their own targets, they usually hit them 9. if nobody pays attention, people stop caring 10. change begins at the top.

One of the top 5 BEST discoveries we ever made for our company

We have been a GGOB practitioner for 18 years. And it was one of our companies top 5 best discoveries.

Jack Stack's Company is in the business of re-manufacturing engines (they sell a product). My concern was how could we make Open Book Management principles work in a service business. In the early months, we adopted Jack's three cornerstones: 1) Know the rules of the game: Create a written business plan, and involve all employees in the annual business planning process. 2) Keep score: Produce monthly financial statements, and teach all employee how to read the P&L. 3) What's in it for me: When the company wins, pay employees Gainsharing checks each quarter. Plus we adopted Jacks meeting schedule: Managers attend weekly Great Huddle Meetings, and all employees attend Chalk Talk meetings. These meetings are designed to inform and keep the team on track with our business plan.

Results? We found Open Book Management works very well in a service business. In fact, it completely changed our culture and our employees love it. Over the years, we have had a few employee leave and take jobs with other companies. But after a few months, some of them return saying they missed our culture and playing the GGOB. I strongly recommend and endorse the GGOB.

It changed our organization... Who knows... It might change yours too!

The most balanced view in the industry

Doug Hoffman's book provides the most balanced and wide reaching view of operational risk in print -- the book addresses large corporate, societal, and management issues, in addition to the more standard operational risk topics, such as quantification and regulatory matters. This is the type of perspective that only someone from the industry -- who spent a number of years as a practitioner can provide. And the inclusion of real life cases brings the whole discussion of operational risk down to a practical level and can serve as a blue print for the implementation of an operational risk program. This book is a great value and already a classic text in the field.

Too much and not enough!

This book is good for those who already know what OpRisk is all about, or at least are familiar with banking terms and financial measurement systems. If you are new to the game, you are likely to become very frustrated.
Mr Hoffman throws a multitude of operational risk "building blocks" on the floor in the opening chapter, tells us that we will use them to build a "house", picks them up one-by-one and explains them - sometimes well, sometimes poorly. If you already have the big picture, i.e. you know what the finished "house" is supposed to look like, you will be able to follow - most of the time (see below). If you know little or nothing about OpRisk, I am fully convinced that the book would be easier to understand backwards - i.e. the chapters are read in reverse order (no joke).
There are also several points in the book which had me scratching my head at the consistency of it all! To pick just one example, on page 186 there is a list of what Mr Hoffman calls "Top Down" and "Bottom Up" risk assessment methodologies. In this list, "Delphi Scenarios" is listed as one of the TOP DOWN methods. Two pages later, under the heading "BOTTOM-UP RISK ASSESSMENT METHODS", Delphi Scenarios are discussed/mentioned!!! What is it really - a Top Down or Bottom Up method??
There are several other examples throughout the book likely to cause more than a little confusion to the attentive beginner.

Taking Operational Risk From Theory to Practice

Doug Hoffman's natural writing style makes this representation of twenty best practice principles for operational risk management a compelling read. Surpassing the strong efforts of previous authors on this subject matter, Doug imparts his wisdom and experience in a thought provoking analysis of the organisational context for operational risk management, with clear and practical take-aways from every chapter.
The book is littered with case histories, war stories and contributions from many industry professionals and current practitioners, ensuring a rich and balanced view.
Of particular note are the chapters addressing risk response strategies and risk financing alternatives, reminding practitioners that quantification and regulatory lobbying are not ends within themselves.
The book is suitable for any business professional with an interest in harnessing enterprise risk, those practitioners who are just starting out on their operational risk journey, and those seasoned players who believe that they have not yet mastered the subject (which is just about all of us).

About the Author

Bruce Colbert is the Director of the Allied Health Department at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown. He holds a master’s in health education and administration, has authored nine books, has written several articles, and has given over 250 invited lectures and workshops at both the regional and national levels. Many of his workshops provide teacher training involving techniques to make the health sciences engaging and relevant to today’s students. In addition, he does workshops on developing effective critical and creative thinking, stress and time management, and study skills. He is an avid basketball player, even after three knee surgeries, which may indicate that he has some learning difficulties.

Jeff Ankney is the Director of Clinical Education for the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown Respiratory Care program, where he is responsible for the development and evaluation of hospital clinical sites. In the past, Jeff has served as a public school teacher, Assistant Director of Cardiopulmonary Services, Program Coordinator of Pulmonary Rehabilitation, and a member of hospital utilization review, hospital policy, strategic planning and patient safety committees. He is a consultant on hospital management and pulmonary rehabilitation concerns. Jeff was also the recipient of the American Cancer Society Public Education Award. He is a pretty fair fly fisherman and wing shot, although his springer spaniel, Rusty, would probably disagree.

Karen Lee is an Associate Professor in the Biology Department at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown, where she teaches all the anatomy courses, including anatomy and physiology for nursing and allied health students. She presents regularly at scientific conferences and has published several articles on crustacean physiology and behavior. An active member of the Council on Undergraduate Research, she is also the chair of the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown’s annual undergraduate symposium. For the last 17 years she has sung bass in women’s barbershop choruses and quartets and more recently has been harmonizing with any singer or guitar player who will let her near the microphone.

So of course I love this series this book was good however I found ...

So of course I love this series this book was good however I found myself getting bored with Peach & Ron I'm not here for them...Sam has totally become my least favorite he just changed to much in this book. I also missed more of Peaches interaction with her friends. It's good to see King has a softer loving side now that his relationship is not what he's used to it being. Blaze is the same old Blaze no growth no change. The last two books left something to be desired when it came to Blaze & Peach I just wish we could get back to more of them being together being in love growing together instead we just have more of the same of them being at odds & Peaches need to learn not to just be seeking attention from any man that shows interest she's still so young & dumb...Also at this point I think the story is starting to get drawn out I just hope I don't end up hating this series because all 7 books could have easily been 3....now the wait begins for 6 & 7....

I love Blaze and Peaches love story but you lost me on this installment. What happen to the rest of the crew? Will we ever find out who planted the camera in Peaches bedroom? What bout ill Ace who's his mother you open up all this to us and still no answer. It was long and boring it seems like ever scene repeats it self. J Peach I love your work but you drop the ball on this. So I'm praying 6 will be a banger cause you have to make up for 5

I don't even know why I keep reading this series maybe hoping it will get better but its not. I literally has to force myself to finish it, thank God for kindle unlimited or I'd be pissed. I started and continued reading this because of the love that blaze and peaches came to have but now its.so off track and everywhere. I think I'm done cause its getting no better, how many more is it gonna be.

Best leadership book I have ever read

I was compelled to write my first ever review of any book after reading "sez" review on Leadership 2.0. I have spent over $20K on business coaching over the last few years and have read several leadership books and other books on biz. For what this book costs and what you get, it is, in my opinion, the most cost effective way to get leadership training specific to you without paying a coach $500 a month. If you think about and answer the online assessment questions honestly, you will have a great guide to your strengths and weaknesses as a leader and a plan of action of how to work on your weaknesses. "Sez" says he or she read the entire book while on a plane. That is clearly not how this book is intended to be used. You are supposed to read the introduction, then take the online assessment, then do the worksheet on what you discover your strengths and weaknesses to be, then systematically work on one item at a time for a 3 to 6 month period to change your leadership habits. Had I read this entire book on a plane, I would have gotten nothing out of it, just like "sez". I was truly baffled by this person's review, so I just had to give my opinion. If you are looking for a leadership book that is a quick read, Leadership 2.0 will disappoint, but if you are looking for a book to help guide you through making real change to your leadership habits, plan on using this book to build a plan and then plan on using the book as a reference over and over (over a period of months or years) as you work your way through identifying your current weakness that demands the most attention and taking action to immediately improve your leadership skills in that area. Tested Lessons You Can Tailor For Your Needs

This book seemingly magically appeared on my desk (someone at work sending me a message?). Obviously this, combined with the authors' previous book, got my attention. I often skim business books, but not this one. Bradberry and Greaves skillfully blend stories and good advice gleaned from research from real organizations, showing how your leadership skills impact job and business performance.

What's helpful about the strategies offered--and there are plenty--is they are the kind of things that I can easily work into my regular routine without having to do a whole life overhaul. I see myself reviewing strategies in the morning, so I can apply them during the rest of the day.

One of the best parts of the book is that it includes a password that give lets you take a test online. Some of what the test revealed was embarrassing, but I suppose that's the point. It helped me see how others see me. If you expect this would be helpful for you, then I bet you'll be pleased with this.

Great book & online assessment; like having your own personal executive coach!

Hallelujah! A leadership book that actually gives you insights and tailored advice that you can use right away at work. Too many leadership books offer generalities about being charismatic, or visionary, or some other flavor of the year. But, in Leadership 2.0, Bradberry and Greaves break out the 22 specific skills effective leaders have in today's workplace. Grouped as either "Core" skills or "Adaptive" skills, each one is explained in plain language and you are given several strategies on how to practice the skill on a daily basis.

The real value of this book is that you also get a passcode that lets you take a leadership 2.0 online self-test. You get a custom analysis, tailored advice on how to strengthen your leadership skills, and they even have a nifty e-mail based reminder system for added reinforcement. For less than the price of a couple grande latte's the assessment and email system is like getting an personal executive coach to help you every day.
