This book is awesome! Any one interested in the life of Jesus should own it. It's a big, high-quality, beautifully-produced book filled with photos, maps and drawings. There is interesting background information on the culture and times backed by the latest archaeological research. The authorsgoes through the life of Jesus and his intent is to make you see, feel and smell the sights and sounds of that time. He succeeds in this goal. I highly recommend this book!

Nice book

I was curious about this book, what with it being a National Geographic publication. I am a fan of National Geographic but, being a Christian, I didn't want Jesus treated as only an historic figure. I don't feel this has been done though.

I usually read reviews, but in this case I found the inside look to be very helpful. I have not read the whole of it yet, but I am certainly learning a lot about the historical time and the art is beautiful.

I am very pleased with this buy.

extremely difficult book

im > 1800 uscf and this book is very difficult. These are the types of exercises I was looking for. THIS IS NOT A BEGINNER TACTICS BOOK and is IDENTICAL to "secret of Chess Tactics" by Dvoretsky So if you own one there is no need to buy this one.

A Highly Rewarding Study

As a player with a growing but still modest chess library, it was only recently that I discovered Dvoretsky's name recurring in the books and reviews of players in-the-know. School of Chess Excellence 2 was my first foray into his writings and I have found it tremendously rewarding, though difficult, to work through. Chief among the book's virtues is its willingness to approach the games of chess legends and relative unknowns with equal respect and equal care, and to strike an excellent balance between analysis and commentary in doing so. Dvoretsky's own games, as well as those of his leading pupils, figure prominently in the work, and contribute a host of insights into the differences between planning and playing, succeeding and failing.
The analysis itself is first-rate. As a player of average talent, I often find tactical analysis comes most easily in positions that are already themselves overtly tactical. By contrast, Dvoretsky excels at revealing the subtlety of tactical thought as it develops through the course of a game. As a result, he routinely shows a culminating tactical shot to be the punctuation mark to a rigorous process of continually seeking out the best move, rather than a stroke of brilliance arriving like a bolt from the blue.
As a stylist, Dvoretsky can tend towards the self-congratulatory from time to time, though this may be as much a result of the difficulties of translation as anything else. For the most part he is likeable and accessible. I agree with previous reviewers that the ideas presented are both difficult and dense, but they should not prevent any player beyond a beginner level from comprehending the book and benefiting greatly from it, provided one is patient. I recommend it.

Great book for advanced players

Dvoretsky's book is for advanced players. In order to get maximum benefit one should probably have a rating of at least 2000 FIDE (app. 2100 USCF). At that level basic tactical skills would be in place. However, in order to develop further one must work with more complicated material, basically well-annotated complex tactical games.
This is where Dvoretsky comes in. The book is packed with complex games and analysis of very high quality, with additional observations and succinct advice about decision-making and psychology in tactical situations. In this book chess is a very concrete game - the master-teacher is a firm believer in the power of the specific example more than in overall synthesis or general conclusions.
If you are looking for quick fixes or easily digested "lessons", look elsewhere. However, if you have reached a certain level of play and are willing to put in the work (answering the training questions, doing independent analysis) its instructional value is very high.
I am rated 2200 ICC standard and have gone through about half of the book. In some positions I have managed very well, but in many others I have missed some points or the main point. I know that I am relatively weak tactically so I have to remind myself that rewards will come from the very fact of trying to solve these problems.
In short: a excellent book for hard-working advanced players

Everett B. Woodruff was a Project Engineer at A. M. Kinney, Inc., a leading architectural, engineering, and design process firm. He was involved in the design of industrial and utility power plants and provided consultation in steam plant operation and maintenance; in plant performance test requirements; and in the development of overall power plant specifications.

Herbert B. Lammers was a consultant for various industries which were dependent upon steam power plants for their reliable source of power. He provided expertise in the efficient combustion of various fuels and in the economic operation and maintenance of boilers and various power plant systems.

Thomas F. Lammers was a Senior Project Manager with Babcock & Wilcox Co., one of the world’s leading designers and suppliers of steam generating systems and related power plant equipment. During his 36 years with the company, Mr. Lammers had various management responsibilities in the areas of engineering, marketing, and project management. From the Author
At 16 I played in a punk rock band and lived rock and roll. Then after decades of seeking the truth, living in communes, I visited Asia Minor, Turkey, to attend a writers retreat. As soon as I got off that plane I felt I was home, in a way that I had never experienced before. I didn't finish my novel, because I fell in love with this incredible country and its people. I went back to Scotland, but soon realised that my time was finished there, and so I emigrated, I was pulled back, destiny was truly calling... Some two years later I arrived at the shore of the Aegean with one bag and no idea of what to do... Within a few weeks I came to know the mother of my son who was born two years later... I had many exhibitions of my art, played Mevlavi music in street concerts, recorded albums... Then I became seriously ill and I was confined to my home for a year, and just knew that I was being stopped in my tracks, incarcerated, so to speak, so that I could write this book; 'Seeds of Future Worlds'. I had to finally, 'Know Thy Self', to truly live a Spiritual life, to know my soul and be true to it. My book of short stories and poems is published here, 'Sui Generis', and I am currently working on my next book, 'Musicians of Thought' about Reincarnation, inspired by the works of Rudolf Steiner.

About the Author
I live on the coast of the Aegean on the ancient site of Myndos, Anatolia, a mystery centre once home to the temple of Prometheus. I live as an artist, a poet, muscian, scholar and writer. It is as if I have lived many lives in this one incarnation. My five year old son is the light of my life. Born in London, travelled the world in love.

Be inspired!

What an interesting and inspiring book, full of challenging ideas and clearly well researched. This is a spiritual book that really delves deeply into the subjects covered within the pages, but it does so, not in an intellectual over bearing way so common in this genre, but through imagination and poetry, fluidly written so that you feel embraced by the words and the author. Wonderful quotes throughout, from Goethe, Novalis, Rumi, Rudolf Steiner and many others that all help to bring the subjects to life and illustrate the themes.
