Paediatric clinical examination

The "Paediatric Clinical Examination" is now in its fourth edition, and rightly so, because it is helpful to all working in pediatrics. Professor Denis Gill and consultant paediatrician Niall O'Brian from Children's Hospital in Dublin, Ireland, have done a wonderful job with this small and handy pocketsize book for students, residents and others working with children.
The book has 11 chapters with introduction to pediatrics, a "form of veterinary medicine", history taking, approaching children, examination at different ages, systems examination, pediatrics as the "measuring doctor", hydration and nutrition, developmental assessment at different ages, the art of examining excreta, using your senses and finally pediatric tips and topics with sound advice.
The book is full of wonderful illustrations, funny and profound advice with quotations, like the words of Sir Dominic Corrigan (1853)" "The trouble with many doctors is not that they do not know enough but that they do not see enough" or the advice to teach thy tongue to say" "I do not know" (Rabbi Moses Maimonides or Rambam, 1135-1204).
All in all a very handy book for the student, the resident or other professional working with children. I had a lot of fun reading it.

Examination made easy for students

An easy and amusing read for students but requires a prior grounding in clinical skills. Useful but certainly not a must have and not the sort of book students can carry and refer to on the ward. Would have benefited from more appropriate tables and flow charts to refer to in the clinical setting.

If you're struggling in your class buy this book

This book helped my pass an Ada class in school. It is just much more readable that my class text and examples ( not that there are many ) that you can find online. My college has a well known expert on Ada teaching there and his helped me more than his class - not that he isn't great but we all have different learning styles.

Clear, Complete, And Surprisingly Fun To Read

I bought the first edition of Rendezvous With Ada many years ago, and with it as my only guide was able to learn this fairly complex language within a few weeks. The flow of the text is excellent, moving from simple to more challenging topics at a good pace. Even better, every aspect of the language, down to the most minute detail, is not only explained, but is demonstrated in one of the many example code segments that lace the book. As an added bonus, the example code is often as humorous as it is lucid. Together with the general enthusiasm conveyed by the prose, the examples not only made learning Ada easier, but genuinely fun. In the second edition of the book Naiditch has included coverage of the newer Ada95 version of the language, not merely by adding a few paragraphs at the end of each chapter, but by a thorough rewriting of the entire book - a rewriting that considerably expanded the book's content, but in no way lost the delightful enthusiasm of the first edition. I've read several other Ada texts since; although all have their merits, none come close to matching this one.

About the Author
STUART RACHELS is Associate Professor of Philosophy at the University of Alabama. He has revised several of James Rachels’ books, including Problems from Philosophy (second edition, 2009) and The Right Thing to Do (fifth edition, 2010), which is the companion anthology to this book. Stuart won the United States Chess Championship in 1989, at the age of 20, and he is a Bronze Life Master at bridge. His website is www.jamesrachels.org/stuart.

James Rachels, the distinguished American moral philosopher, was born in Columbus, Georgia, graduating from Mercer University in Macon in 1962. He received his Ph.D. in 1967 from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. He taught at the University of Richmond, New York University, the University of Miami, Duke University, and the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where he spent the last twenty-six years of his career. 1971 saw the publication of Rachels’ groundbreaking textbook Moral Problems, which ignited the movement in America away from teaching ethical theory towards teaching concrete practical issues. Moral Problems sold 100,000 copies over three editions. In 1975, Rachels wrote “Active and Passive Euthanasia,” arguing that the distinction so important in the law between killing and letting die has no rational basis. Originally appearing in the New England Journal of Medicine, this essay has been reprinted roughly 300 times and is a staple of undergraduate education. The End of Life (1986) was about the morality of killing and the value of life. Created from Animals (1990) argued that a Darwinian world-view has widespread philosophical implications, including drastic implications for our treatment of nonhuman animals. Can Ethics Provide Answers? (1997) was Rachels’ first collection of papers (others are expected posthumously). Rachels’ McGraw-Hill textbook, The Elements of Moral Philosophy, is now in its fourth edition and is easily the best-selling book of its kind. Over his career, Rachels wrote 5 books and 85 essays, edited 7 books and gave about 275 professional lectures. His work has been translated into Dutch, Italian, Japanese, and Serbo-Croatian. James Rachels is widely admired as a stylist, as his prose is remarkably free of jargon and clutter. A major theme in his work is that reason can resolve difficult moral issues. He has given reasons for moral vegetarianism and animal rights, for affirmative action (including quotas), for the humanitarian use of euthanasia, and for the idea that parents owe as much moral consideration to other people’s children as they do to their own. James Rachels died of cancer on September 5th, 2003, in Birmingham, Alabama.

Good Book for Beginners

I am not widely read in ethics or philosophy in general. I took an introductory philosophy course as an undergrad and did not return to studying ethics until graduate school, which is where I came into contact with this book. For me, as a novice in ethics, I found Rachels' text enlightening. He neither dwells on theory too long nor dabbles too much in case studies. He provides enough to give you a foundational understanding of the big theories in ethics. Sure, there are probably holes in the material and you probably won't be able to dazzle others with your sudden powers of ethical thought, but it does get you to think about ethics in ways that are almost exciting. Compared to the other textbooks I had in my ethics class, this was a joy to read. The price, as others have said, is too high. But if you have to study it in class, you can't really get around that anyway.

Excellent Book for College Undergraduates & Beginners by Small Town Lawyer "clarence"

This Rachels'(father and son) book has been around since 1986 when the first edition was published by Random House. Few textbooks last more than 25 years. Virtually all of the ones I am familiar with have an excellent quality that enables them to endure. Sometimes good books do not last; but seldom do bad books persist in the college textbook market. This book is well written and well-organized. Materials are developed in a logical and helpful manner. The case illustrations are germain and are clear. I have taught out of three different editions of this book at four universities over a span of 22 years; and consistently, the majority of students who studied this book in my classes found this textbook one of the best ones available. In my career, I worked in publishing; I was an editor at various journals; and I published and/or edited four different books. My students and I liked this one. It does an excellent job of explaining the development of moral philosophy to undergrads who are non-philosophy majors.

Highly Recommended

This is the main book we use in my Introduction to Ethics class at the University of Kansas and it does a very good job at disproving the 4 common "failed" ethical theories that most people know about and provides an understandable explanation of the viable ethical theories today such as Utilitarianism and Social Contract Theory. It does not read like a textbook, it is very captivating and I would recommend it to anyone that is interested in a general understanding of ethical theory.

James A. Speck, PE, worked as a regional manager of The Johnson Gage Company, Bloomfield, Connecticut, following a career in the fastener industry. He has trained and served as a technical expert in the Department of Commerce’s National Voluntary Laboratory Accreditation program for fasteners and metals; presented numerous workshops and seminars on fastener fundamentals, fastener applications engineering, and screw thread technology; and authored numerous publications. He received his BS (1971) in business administration from Drexel University, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and an MS (1974) in management from the Hartford Graduate Center, Hartford, Connecticut, and he is a licensed professional engineer in Connecticut.

Daphne, the most beautiful of the Six Sisters, picks her own husband

It seems that 18-year-old Daphne, the fourth daughter of the Reverend Charles Armitage, is the most beautiful of "The Six Sisters" that Marion Chesney has been writing about in these romance novels of Regency England, so of course that means trouble. No one is more aware of Daphne's dazzling beauty than Daphne herself, who is also painfully aware of her father's track record when it comes to finding wealthy noblemen to marry his daughters. As we all know, the vicar likes to hunt, and he requires the financial support of his three sons-in-law to do so. But Daphne has other ideas, namely to marry Cyril Archer. At face value (and I do mean at face value), they are a perfect match, because he is as vain and empty-headed as Daphne herself. Once married, she can continue to present the pretty picture of herself to the world without having to reveal there is an empty shell of a woman behind the beautiful face.

However, while Daphne is in London with Lady Godolphin the malaprop-prone cousin whose home all of the Armitage girls seem to end up with when they visit London town, Reverend Armitage's affairs suffer a catastrophic misfortune. You see, a jealous bishop is after the vicar's hunting pack, and when Mr. Simon Garfield comes to the rescue, and proves himself to be as rich as he is noble, Reverend Armitage offers up Daphne as a bride. This means daughter number four is going to have to drop the facade and demand the right to find her own husband (like that is going to happen). Meanwhile, Annabelle, the second oldest sister, is having troubles with her own marriage because the new baby in the house tends to scream all of the time. Annabelle might be more maternal if the boy was actually her own, but that, of course, is part of the problem.

"Daphne" would not be a Chesney romance if the title character was not put into a compromising position, and we have one of those as well in this book. But by now Chesney's readers fully understand and appreciate her formula as one forced marriage after another leads to true love and romance. There are plenty of period touches for those who pay attention to such details, and while the characters are all familiar types from such tales, Chesney clearly takes great pleasure in putting them through their paces. Besides, all of the twists and turns in the plot add to the general sense of merriment, as does her sense of humor. But in the end love will prevail, Mr. Archer will be forced to flee the field, and the vicar will get to keep his hunt. Next up is "Diana the Huntress," which should give you plenty of indications as to what sort of handful she will prove to be and if you have gotten two-thirds of the way through the series there is no reason to stop now.

The six sister

I've bought the six sisters' series in the wrong order with Daphne being the last one in the series that I got. The book is good and typical Marion Chesney. Daphne, who knows she is a beauty, finds another beauty in the handsome Cyril Archer, but in typical Marion Chesney style, there is more to meet the eye. The Vicar is indebeted to a Mr. Simon Garfield, who is able to read Daphne like a book. He knows she knows she's a beauty and putting up a front because it's easier that way. The way Marion Chesney gets these two finally together is delightful.
This is not the best of the six sisters' series, that's why I gave only four stars. I was somewhat handicapped since I had the read all the other in the series before I read Daphne. I would recommend you read the series in the correct order, but even if you don't, this book is still wonderful to read.

another hilarious romp!

I'm not sure if the authors British or not but these books are so darn clever, witty & intelligently written! I'm just in love with the whole series and I am so happy that there are more MC Beaton books out so that I can read a different series is well. I hate to give any spoilers but I'll just say that if you want to good laugh and a Merry romp through a regency romance, then this is your series!

ERNEST L. ELIEL is W. R. Kenan, Jr. Professor Emeritus at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is the author of Stereochemistry of Carbon Compounds and Elements of Stereochemistry, coeditor of the Wiley series, Topics in Stereochemistry, and coauthor of Conformational Analysis. The recipient of numerous academic and scientific awards and honors, Professor Eliel is Past President of the American Chemical Society and a member of the National Academy of Sciences. SAMUEL H. WILEN is Professor of Chemistry at City College, City University of New York, where he has taught since 1957. Professor Wilen is the author of Tables of Resolving Agents and Optical Resolutions, coauthor of Enantiomers, Racemates and Resolutions, and coeditor of the Wiley series, Topics in Stereochemistry. LEWIS N. MANDER has been Professor of Chemistry at the Australian National University since 1980. This is a classic book by a world-renowned expert. I am a practicing organic chemist, and this book has never failed to answer even the most obscure questions I have had about stereochemistry. It is highly recommended as an indispensible reference on the subject.

A great compendium of organic stereochemistry

I bought this book about 5 months ago while taking an advanced organic synthesis class. I wasn't sure if it would be of help. But, there aren't many comparable stereochemistry books available.

The money was well spent!

If there's a common question regarding stereochemistry, it'll have the answer in there. If there's an obscure question regarding stereochemistry, it'll also have the answer. Kudos to the authors for cramming so much information into a text.

When I've needed more material than the text presents, ample references are provided. Bear in mind, I'm talking about exact experimental procedures, and not general experiments. The authors cover experiments, their significance, and references. When I've needed to duplicate an experiment, I check the references.

I have as yet to come across a stereochemistry question that the authors haven't addressed. This is surprising, since I'm knee deep in stereochemistry. Presently, the book in on my desk, not my bookshelf.
