PAMELA NEWKIRK is a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and Associate Professor of Journalism in the Department of Journalism and Mass Communications at New York University. She is the author of Within the Veil: Black Journalists, White Media. Her articles have appeared in numerous publications, including The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Nation, Essence, and ARTnews. She lives in New York City with her husband and children.

No Less Than a Classic

Pamela Newkirk has collected a treasury of fifty love letters written by African Americans dating from 1858 to today. Her historical introductions to the each era and each couple are worth the price of the book. The letters themselves offer intimate glimpses into each relationship.

Especially intriguing is the way the letters from males emphasize their respect for and sense of equality of their female mate. Given the patriarchal culture of the past, this is an amazing testimony to the maturity of their love.

One could wish for more letters (and in many cases many more letters were available). The publishers seem to have focused on economy and beauty of display--quality over quantity. For the reader wanting a quick, moving introduction to this genre, "A Love No Less" is no less than a classic. For the researcher wanting an in-depth examination, other original sources will meet that need.

Looking for an Excellent Resource for Your Small Group?

YOU FOUND IT! I don't know of a better small group resource. I've been through this workbook several different times with several different groups, everything from teens to pastors. I've always been pleased.
Two aspects of this study sticks out to me.
First, the wealth of companion material from Renovare. You will not run out of ways to challenge the members of your small group.
Second, the respect that is shown for believers in different Christian traditions. Renovare is distinctly and unashamedly Christian. It is not popular philosophy dressed up in Christian language. Yet, this book, as with other Renovare resources, value the distinctives that make up the different major themes in Christian thought. This could cause discomfort for those who are locked into a very narrow version of the faith.

transformational living

I have been utilizing this book in my own spiritual journey for the last 4 years. The growth and depth of relationship with my Lord Jesus Christ is amazing and truly transforming.

I am the director of a leadership development program for my denomination. We are now utilizing this book as a part of our training with wonderful results. Educational and edifying ....

This is a great resource for bringing more balance into your life. The book describes six ways of meeting God - Holiness, Charismatic, Contemplative, Social Justice, Incarnational, and Evangelical - and sometimes these words don't mean what you think they mean. The authors encourage the reader to broaden their relationship with and vision of God, and for me, I was able to see God working more powerfully, and in many more ways, than before.

Beware of Slim Volumes!

As they say, "beware of slim volumes"... this book while not a "big book" it is packed with vital information on navigating the complexities of human relationships. Dr. Skeen uses the Schema Theory which was appealing to me in examining my patterns because of my repeating of destructive, self defeating behavior in relationships. Of all the books I have read on relationships, this book clearly helped me identify the root causes of my struggles in relationships. Unlike some books on relationships, this one is not only theory but practice. Dr. Skeen thoughtfully engages the reader with worksheets and exercises which truly engaged me in the process of honestly evaluating my truth and my part in the dynamics of my relationships. The book is very helpful because no matter if you are the "critical partner" or not, there is ample understanding for all parties. The book is not a "blame book", it's a book of deepening understanding, empathy and most importantly healing solutions. Because the Schema Theory is about addressing repeating destructive patterns in relationship that are related to childhood, this work gets to the real causes of our reactions and difficulties in dealing with others, and truly helps the reader create solutions and ultimately healing and healthy choices.
Dr. Michelle Skeen also has a great website which I highly recommend, [...]. The website also has links to her weekly radio show, "Relationships 2.0", which is in limited distribution in California radio markets. I predict Dr. Skeen's work and media exposure is just beginning, keep your eyes and ears tuned to her. She has valuable workable solutions to the challenges of improving relationships. This book is a staple of my self improvement, and I cannot recommend it enough as a path to growth!

The Critical Partner

I heard Michelle Skeen on the radio and I decided to buy her book to learn more about why I am attracted to men who are critical of me. I really like the schema theory that Dr. Skeen has the reader use to identify core beliefs. It helped me understand more about myself, my past partners and my partner selections. The alternative coping strategies are helpful. I refer to them frequently because it is easy for me to fall back into old bad habits if I don't stay aware of my behavior.

Relationship Changing Advise

This book is an important new resource not only for people in relationships with critical partners but anyone struggling with a critical co-worker, friend or family member. Skeen has written a well-organized, easy to read book with helpful examples and worksheets at every step of the way. She shows an extremely effective way for a couple motivated towards change to move forward in a positive way. I would recommend this book to anyone hurting from the sting of criticism.

A great approach to teaching writing

I am currently using this program with seventh grade students, and I can tell you it has given them a confidence they were sorely lacking. It's pointless to simply tell students to write better, or to vary their sentence structures, for if they knew how to do that they would have done it in the first place. In order to combat this, Halupa has given a name to a variety of techniques you can in turn teach students, giving them a menu of items of which to choose when they sit down to write. Like following a formula, students are able to solve the difficult equation that is writing. In using these tools, students are more proficient at writing, generating work that is deeper and more meaningful. Try this. It's worth it.

A useful handbook

Halupa's text is full of ways to think about teaching writing. While the ideas may not all be completely new, he does frame a good approach for teaching writing in a meaningful way. He generally avoids using "English speak," instead favoring easy analogies.

This text could be a very handy primer on teaching writing, especially for those who don't have previous training. I don't think I'll be using all of his many acronyms, but the key ideas are worth keeping in mind.

I guess I'm just too particular.

"Putting it down", now. I can't read it. I spend most of my time rolling my eyes. I have tried to read it. I have been struggling for a week trying to read it and I can't get through the first book let alone the three to follow. It reads like a bad role playing game where the hero is this perfect 2 dimensional character and everybody else around is less than that. There are no challenges, no angst, no suspense.

It hints at challenge but then, of course, Whill is going to succeed. The writer declares just that, often in those very words: "of course". And 'finallys' and 'after some times' when no time at all has passed.

And the person who is supposed to be like a father to Whill? All he does is agree with everything Whill says. Everybody agrees with what Whill says, old and young alike, regardless of their prior experience?

I'd rather play Spider Solitaire than read these books.

Epic fantasy read - Ploof is brilliant

Whill of Agora has everything you want in a fantasy series, great writing, believable, likeable characters, and a decent story line that keeps you wanting more. This is the story of Whill, a young man with an unbelievable destiny. This destiny will see him going from his fairly quite life to one where he will be fighting evil Dark Elves, meeting exceptional people, such as Elves, Dwarves, even Dragons.
Ploof creates a beautiful world with stunning landscapes, he does a wonderful job of describing them, that you feel that you are actually there. The writing gives you an extra depth, allowing you to completely be drawn into the story with the characters.
The characters are well written (there has been some criticism about them in other reviews, but personally, I thought this to be unfounded). This is a fantasy book, and meant to be a fun and enjoyable read. And that's what it is, thrilling, creative and compelling reading.
Whill is a bit weak to start with, but soon grows, getting some depth, and later in the story, his troubled character is written very well. Roakore the Dwarf is brilliant, and fits well into the genre and mold of Dwarfs, making the story that much better.
There are several Elves that are equally well written, giving additional abilities of the Elves and story arcs. As well as the major characters, there are the usual minor characters from an assortment of races, giving additional story arcs.
Ploof's characters come together well, each adding a bit to the story, and so he covers the emotional arc as well.
As for the story, this is not totally unoriginal, with a young man, finding he has a legacy to fulfill, and an evil nemesis that he must defeat. However, Ploof has changed how things happen in this story, adding some extra plot twists, giving us some extra characters, and shaking up the story a bit so that this is not the normal tale, making it not only an original twist, but clever, intriguing and so fast paced you will lose hours turning pages.
This is a wonderful series, each part getting creating more of his remarkable world, giving more insight into Whill, and getting us to reflect on some interesting questions along the way. Ploof's battle scene's are truly amazing, but this book does not get lost in war as a lot of Fantasy does, it is more about the characters, making it a brilliant read.
Don't miss this excellent series, its worth it.

Ploof is a wordsmith but no storysmith; his world is detailed but his characters are flat and affected.

First, a caveat: I was unable to finish this book. I tried and got close, more than 80% of the way through, but I got to the point where I just couldn’t commit more time to reading it. Because of this, I will only comment minimally on plot structure and development.
Whill of Agora is worded well and the world is unique, interesting, and detailed. Ploof sets the scene very well. He quickly immerses the reader into the world, making it effortless and seamless to imagine the scenes he writes.
Why 2 stars? Because Ploof is a wordsmith but no storysmith; his characters are flat and affected. Each one frequently spouts off speeches that are unnatural and seem to be merely different shades of the author’s own soapbox for what is wrong with the world or how things should be. These speeches may make for interesting treatises but poor dialogue. The characters rationalize in a studied rather than natural manner, and yet on the other hand their conclusions tend to be odd. For example, the protagonist, who is being hunted by every evil under the sun and who by merely a show of friendliness gets a boy’s entire family slaughtered, takes on said boy as his official ward. Not a single character notes how this is a selfish act to soothe his own conscious that will result in the boy being hunted as well for the rest of his probably short life; instead they all admire his act of nobility. I have no problem with the protagonist making a poor choice; I have a problem with every character thinking with one mind with the protagonist. This is because all the characters represent the author’s frame of mind and perspective. Not a one takes on a mind of his own.
I very much wanted to like this book, especially since I had the box set and the world was so interesting, but I couldn’t even finish it. After trudging slowly through it, I finally just gave up.

What could have been a compelling cross-race love of ages was instead a trite romance I would expect of a contemporary book about pre-teens.

Denise Fenzi is beyond BRILLIANT!

Denise Fenzi is not only a highly respected trainer of working dogs, she creates excitement in the people who follow her training methods. This book has packaged Denise's brilliance in a format that is accessible to dog trainers across the spectrum, from those wishing to compete at the international level to recreational dog-sport enthusiasts. Fenzi's methods strengthen the dog-handler relationship through increasing engagement, focus, and enthusiasm from both parties, dog and human. It serves to make training enjoyable for both parties, including learning techniques on how to recognize and handle stress and lack of focus in the dog. I found the writing to be very relatable and easy to understand. Instead of just giving "go do this" advice, it contained sufficient foundational information so that I could understand why it was important but not feel overwhelmed by it. I walked away from each chapter increasingly excited to go build my relationship with my dog!

even the family pet dog owner will glean much from this book that is easy to read

Book 1 is a book that will benefit anyone who wants to build a relationship with their dog based on mutual trust and respect. Although it's written for an audience that is focused on competive dog sports, even the family pet dog owner will glean much from this book that is easy to read. It explains the science behind how dogs learn in a user freindly, not-to-technical way. Since punishment methods are still prevalent, the authors clearly describe why these can work short term, but back-fire in the long run and then contrasts that with the benefits of using force free methods. Reading this book warmed my heart knowing that as it is read by the public, more and more dogs will enjoy participaing with their humans in training and their lives in general.

A great first step to building a great relationship with your best friend.

I love this book & wish I had the benefit of how to build a relationship with my dogs when I started training decades ago. I have all the books in this series but Book 1 gets you off to a great start with solid foundation. I read this & later enrolled in my first class at Fenzi Dog Sports Academy. As my first choice, I selected "Engagement" class instructed by the author. I'm now taking my 4th course with the Academy & this book was very likely the catalyst that sent me on this training path.
