This practical guide provides a robust positive-parenting framework for professionals coaching parents of infants, toddlers, and primary school children. The first half of the book explains behaviorist and attachment theories of parenting, comparing, contrasting, and synthesizing them into an effective, research-informed approach to practice. The second half shows these guidelines in action, using play therapy as a means to improve disruptive child behaviors, correct harsh parenting practices, and address root causes of adversarial parent-child relationships. Throughout these chapters, vivid composite cases demonstrate not only common parent-child impasses but also therapist empathy, flexibility, and self-awareness.
This innovative text:
- Makes a rigorous case for a combined behavioral/attachment approach to parent coaching.
- Reviews current data on behavioral and attachment-based parenting interventions.
- Details the use of an attachment-informed approach to providing behavioral interventions such as Parent-Child Interaction Therapy and Helping the Noncompliant Child.
- Illustrates how parent coaching can be tailored to match different patterns of attachment.
- Includes tools for evaluating coaching sessions.
Integrating Behaviorism and Attachment Theory in Parent Coaching is an essential guide for professionals, graduate students, and researchers in clinical, child and school psychology, social work, pediatrics, mental health counseling, and nursing.

Excellent resource!
By Tracy Moran
Dr. Beth Troutman's wit and experience shine through each chapter of this innovative approach to integrating two seminal theories of parent-child clinical work. Her writing is clear, informative, and engaging. This book is now my go to resource for teaching attachment and behavior-based approaches to working with parents and their young children. It is useful as an introductory resource for those just starting out and as a resource for more experienced professionals who seek further training with either model or in their integration. I highly recommend this must-read book!

Dr. Troutman has successfully synthesized two theories (Attachment and Behaviorism) into a user friendly text for PCIT providers. If you are a clinician working with parents and young children it is impossible to read this book without identifying strategies for families. Dr. Troutman offers clear and practical suggestions while staying true to PCIT. More importantly, Dr. Troutman addresses issues of counter transference through her own thoughtful use of self. This will definitely be one of my “go to” books filled with highlighted passages and sticky notes!

A Practical and Insightful Read
By S Goren
Integrating Behaviorism and Attachment Theory in Parent Coaching by Psychologist Beth Troutman is an insightful and clearly worded guide for practitioners and parents. Written in plain accessible language, it lays out Attachment and Behaviorism theories, etiology, research, as well as, how Dr. Troutman evolved to use and Teach Parent Child Interaction Therapy.
She provides practical vignettes and explanations illustrating how she evaluates existing parent –child relationships in addition to the reasoning that supports why coaching is an effective modality for assisting parent-child interactions for example; “to help a parent recognize and override automatic tendencies in emotional situations.”
Dr. Troutman’s skillful guide for coaching parent-child interactions makes a significant contribution to both the study of Child Development and for those of us who work actively to promote and maintain the cognitive, behavioral and emotional development of children.
