It was ok
By Akeisha
I received an ARC via NetGalley for an honest review
While browsing NetGalley for my next read, I came across A Secret to Keep.

Initially, the blurb is what really drew me to this story. Overall, I thought the story was an ok read. With this story there was so many things that could have been added to make me fall in love with the story a little more.

First, let me start with what I did like about this read.

After reading 'A Secret to Keep', I realized I don't read a lot of books with interracial couples. I loved how Gates loved everything about Sloane (curly hair, her skin, etc.). I love it when characters have strong and funny individuals around them and I really appreciated how Sloane's friends and aunt was always there to protect and assist her. The story has a HEA which I appreciated.

What I didn't like about A Secret to Keep.

I felt that the secret that Sloane was keeping shouldn't have been a secret. Sloane had so many times to reveal what she was hiding from Gates however she felt it was in her son's best interest to keep lying. I wanted to stand behind her decisions and say ” Yes, you go girl you are doing the right thing”. Instead I just could not understand her reasoning behind the entire situation. Just thinking about Sloane stirs up a little anger and frustrated in me. I found myself questioning the age of Sloane and a few times Gates. Sloane sounded between the ages of 19-21, inexperience and immature(Sorry).

Overall, I wish the story would have had a better pace and have that element to keep me engaged. I wanted Sloane to be a little more confident and actually reason with herself when it came to her decisions. I wanted to feel that connection I love to make with the characters of a book. A Secret to Keep does bring out emotions like anger and frustration.

Was this one good? It took me a few days to read this and I wished I had a better review for the author. I commend the author for putting out her thoughts and allowing me to read this title.

Immature Heroine
By Bbjkls
Spoilers: as other reviewers have bought up, she had no real reason to keep the main hero from knowing about his son and the lies she told to keep him from knowing were ridiculous. I felt like she used her friends especially her guy friend to get her way and I thought she was very, very immature. Honestly, I wanted her to lose custody to the hero because I disliked her so much. The hero deserved someone so much better.

not for me

Review from Jeannie Zelos book reviews
Genre:  Romance, Women’s Fiction
I enjoy novels set around this kind of story, but sadly this one was just meh...OKish but nothing special for me. It started well, and when Sloane and Gates relationship began to deteriorate I really felt for her. A Dear John letter though? Cowardly way out.
Then she finds out she’s pregnant and doesn’t tell Gates. She has this idea that as his father was a bad dad, and Gates has recently become more and more like him ( hence the break up) that her child deserves more, and she doesn’t tell him about Brayden. Its the kind of storyline that I’ve seen done well before, but in this book it just wasn’t backed up with enough evidence.
Then Gates renters her life, and from then on it seemed to be one lie on top of another, and a constant backward and forward “shall I tell him, yes I will, no I won’t,” with her aunt and friends telling her he has a right to know. It became boring, all the angsting about the decision, and where I had first admired her I got really irritated at the way she dragged her friends in without thinking about their position. They were a fabulous support and if I was Chase’s girlfriend Hannah, I’d have been saying “ her or me mister – you choose” as Sloane's faffing about was having a terrible effect on their relationship. She really abused their friendship IMO.
There really wasn’t enough story here to keep me interested, usually there’s more day to day issues and other things that keep the tale fresh, but this was just one long, long plot of Sloane, Gates and Brayden, and The Decision and for me it palled...I needed more variety, more interest, more evidence of her stance that Gates had changed. Allie the would-be girlfriend could have been made so much more, and plots like that expanded to add interest.
Stars: two. Just didn’t cut it for me. as ever this is just one opinion, and others will feel differently.
